Blind Irishman sees with the aid of son's tooth in his eye - Yahoo! News

I think that this is possibly the oddest medical headline that I've seen, and that's saying something.

Medical student gives a speech to the families of those who have donated their bodies for study purposes

vitum medicinus ::: a life of medicine: This memorial service is unique in that it is so much more.

I can't count the number of people that I know who are organ donors, but refuse to check off the "give my body for study" box on their form as they think that all that medical students are going to do is play pranks with their bodies. I think that I'll save a copy of this speech.

YouTube - "Unforgettable" - Trailer

This looks like a fascinating documentary. I'm always amazed at my daughters' memory skills...it's not unusual for either of them to come out with statements such as "Remember when we went to the park on August 18th, 1999 and met the little boy with the blue overalls and purple shirt? He was cool." It makes them rather difficult to deal with sometimes, as you definitely can't forget promises that you've made, or explanations that you've given!

The Craziness You've Heard People Say in Their Sleep

The Craziness You've Heard People Say in Their Sleep:

"Apparently I talk in my sleep as well. According to my manager, and corroborated by my phone's outgoing call log, I attempted to call off work one morning because I didn't like the smell of peaches."

Some of these are great. Of course, my husband regularly tries to protect us from the Russian Revolutionaries who are apparently coming to sack our house, find recipes for cake for when the Queen comes over later that day, and insists that I write reports for a company that doesn't exist, so maybe I have a finer appreciation for them.

And my daughter just told me that when her asthma was bothering her the other night I told her to go and get her puffer from the gas station in the basement.

My spam of the day

Email: "Hello Jeanette!
Create voluptuous and dramatically defined lashes with no clumps in sight with NEW Define-A-Lash® Volume Mascara."

I'd like to thank them, because it is a priority in my life at the moment. After all, with one kid suffering from pneumonia, neurotic kid off on a 3 day field trip with monster bullies from school, and my son eating himself and attacking everyone else in sight, my main thought when I get up in the morning IS how to improve my lashes.

I guess that it's an improvement over telling me that my penis isn't big enough to satisfy my girlfriend.

Yes, children need to play outside, use their imaginations, and not be tied to bought toys...etc. etc. But damn, I want one of these. In adult size. I may have to start a day care just so that I can justify getting one.

The Next Slum?

The Next Slum?

Very interesting article. If you're at all interested in this topic, I'd also recommend the documentary "The End of Suburbia". While it's about peak oil and what could possibly happen to society when oil becomes more expensive and less available, there are also some fascinating ideas about the future of suburbia, and new things that are happening in urban planning.

Flashes of Hope

Flashes of Hope

What an incredible organization- we were so lucky that my daughter survived her cancer, but the photos that we have of that time are still so special to me. I can't imagine how much it would mean to other families to be able to access this kind of program.

It never ceases to amaze me the amazing ways that people can find to make others' lives better.

Damn, just what we need

Eli Stone - Television - Notebook - New York Times

"A new legal drama making its debut this month on ABC is stepping into a subject that is the source of heated debate among some parents — the relationship between autism and childhood vaccines — and seemingly coming down on the side that has been all but dismissed by prominent scientific organizations."

Because we know that what's put on TV as entertainment is NEVER effective at influencing the credulous. This is a show that cries out for a boycott.

The absolute "best" theory of autism cause that I've heard yet

Mentioned here Thimerosal Exposure Declines, Autism Rates Increase, and a Note About Myself

"From my own observation: Moms of autistic kids are party goers or ex-party goers. Leaves me to think that birth control or drugs is the cause."

It's actually a close second to the theory that autistic kids are sent here by aliens to be emissaries to the rest of the world (kind of difficult if they're non-verbal I'd say), but the "party-going mom" one is pretty classic too.

And I knew that the anti-vaccine people weren't going to take the new study lying down- so far my favourite theory that they've come up with is that the large amount of immigrants coming from thimerosal using countries account for the increase. Sometimes you just have to laugh so that you don't scream.
